The 2.0-liter Toyota 1G-GE engine was produced at the company’s plants from 1988 to 1993 and was installed in a number of popular models of the concern, such as Mark II, Crown, Supra and Soarer. This unit replaced the 1G-GEU motor in 1988 and is in fact its updated version.

The 1G-GE engine is one of the most reliable among Toyota motors of its time. However, it can have some problems at high mileage:

  1. Reliability and life
    The engine is known for its durability and with regular maintenance, it can go 400,000 kilometers or more without any problems.
  2. Oil consumption at high mileages.
    At high mileages, you may experience increased oil consumption due to piston ring seizure. This can be corrected by replacement or repair.
  3. Swimming RPMs
    The main cause of erratic idle speeds is a dirty throttle plate or malfunctioning idle speed regulator (idle control valve).
  4. Oil pressure sensor
    Some owners complain of oil pressure sensor failures or oil leaking from under the sensor, which may require replacing the gasket.
  5. Lack of hydrocompensators
    The engine is not equipped with hydrocompensators, so it is important to check valve clearances regularly, every 20,000 km.
