Troubleshooting and repairing the SR18DE/Di engine
Along with the legendary SR20 2-liter motor, as well as the sporty SR16VE, Nissan also produced a quiet 1.8-liter variant called the SR18. This motor was based on SR20 and differed from it by pistons of smaller diameter 82.5 mm (86 mm in SR20DE). Also on this motor used inlet valves 32 mm (on SR20 their diameter is 34 mm), exhaust valves 28 mm (30 mm – SR20). The camshafts on SR18DE are as follows: phase 251/247, lift 10.0/9.2 mm. A different brain is used, otherwise it is the same SR20DE, but with a smaller displacement.
In addition to the variant with distributed fuel injection (SR18DE), there was also a mono-injection version SR18Di, characterized by a different cylinder head. This engine, in fact, is an analog of SR20Di.
Like its big brother, SR18DE was equipped with hydrocompensators, so you will not face any valve adjustment. The camshafts are driven by a chain, the timing chain itself is quite reliable and goes 200-250 thousand kilometers, sometimes more.
This motor was produced until 2001, after which it was replaced by a more recent QG18DE.
Problems and disadvantages of Nissan SR18DE engines
- A virtually trouble-free motor easily goes 300 – 400 thousand km without overhaul
- Many owners are faced with floating revs due to failures of RCH and DMRV
- Lubricant leakage points are crankshaft oil seal and oil pressure sensor
- The timing chain has a life of 250,000 kilometers, approximately by this mileage it is stretched
- The use of cheap lubricant leads to clogged channels and oil starvation
Possible periodic problems with RCH and DMRV, otherwise, using quality gasoline and oil, you can drive without problems 300-400 thousand km and more.

If you want to know how to install a turbine on the SR18DE engine, then it is worth saying at once, it is possible to refine such a motor within some limits, you can even install a turbo kit, but this is money in the wind, any such tuning on the SR20 will be more effective. Buy a contract SR20DET/SR20VE, make a swap and you will get 200 hp, and in the case of SR20DET, after the boustap, you can get 300 hp. Plus it will save you a lot of money.
