KA24DE/E engine troubleshooting and repair
The KA24 engine appeared in 1988 as a replacement for the old Z24. This engine used an in-line 4-cylinder cast iron cylinder block, height 247 mm. The piston diameter is 89 mm, and there is a forged long-stroke crankshaft with 96 mm stroke, 165 mm long forged connecting rods, and the piston height is 33.9 mm. On top is an aluminum cylinder head with a single camshaft (SOHC) and 3 valves per cylinder (two intake and one exhaust). The intake valves are 34mm in diameter and the exhaust valves are 40mm in diameter. The camshaft on this engine has the following characteristics: phase 240/248, lift 10.38/10.38 mm. On off-road cars used shaft 232/232, lift 9.7/9.7 mm. Such SOHC motors were called KA24E.
Later, since 1991, the twin-shaft (DOHC) 16-valve cylinder head, with 4 valves per cylinder, was also used. The diameter of the intake valves is 36.6 mm, and the exhaust valves are 31.3 mm. These engines are called KA24DE and differ oil pan, oil injectors, pistons, crankshaft (a little shorter), compression ratio of 9.5 (On SUVs 9.2 and 9.3). A number of different camshafts were used on these engines. Until 1994, the following were used: 240/248 phase, 8.9/9.32 mm lift. In 1995 on S14 240SX they were replaced by 232/232, lift 8.73/9.06 mm and were used until the end of production, also in this year the intake manifold was changed. On other cars remained camshafts 240/248, but in 1997 the exhaust shaft was replaced by a narrower (phase 232), further camshafts were made even narrower.
Off-road and other large cars with KA24DE used a different, lower intake manifold and the lowest camshafts. The KA24DE was not equipped with hydrocompensators, so it requires periodic valve adjustment. Valve clearances on cold: intake and exhaust 0.28-0.36 mm.
The KA24 engine is equipped with a chain. Replacement of the timing chain is required very rarely, usually after 300 thousand kilometers and more.
Together with the KA24DE, a younger 2-liter KA20DE was produced.
The engine KA24DE was replaced in 2004 by a more modern 2.5-liter QR25DE.
Problems and disadvantages of KA24 engines
The KA24E/DE motor belongs to the pleiad of those very simple, reliable and durable Japanese engines of the 90s. Of some possible problems, it is worth noting that on front-wheel drive KA24s, even from a small jamming of the oil pan can lose oil pressure. You then have to remove the oil pan and check the condition of the oil pan. Also, this motor can be easily ruined by pouring low-quality/fake oil. After that there are extraneous timing chain noises, etc. Only regular maintenance with quality oil is the key to a long life of Nissan KA24DE (E). An unpleasant feature of this series is high fuel consumption, it is a common thing. Otherwise, reliability is at the highest level.

Atmospheric
Replacement of camshafts on stock, but more aggressive will not give a big increase, you can not waste time looking for them. Maximum that can be removed on stock camshafts 248/248, with cold intake, exhaust manifold 4-2-1, straight-through exhaust on 63 mm pipe, light flywheel, tuned brain JWT, it is about 20 extra hp. To remove about 200 hp on wheels, you need to buy an intake manifold Xcessive, throttle 90 mm (VK45DE), camshafts on 272/272 with springs, do porting of the cylinder head, buy light forged pistons (compression ratio ~11) and connecting rods, main and connecting rod liners, SR20DET 370 cc injectors, manifold 4-1, straight-through exhaust on 63 mm pipe. You can take a little over 200 hp by putting the throttles from Suzuki GSXR 1000 and increasing the compression ratio.
Approximately similar can be built on the basis of KA24E, but you will have to maximally refine the cylinder head and put increased valves, in the end, the power will still be somewhat lower than on the KA24DE.
There are also stroker kits for KA24DE, with connecting rods 165 mm long, crankshaft 102 mm and pistons 90 mm, which gives the volume of 2.6 liters, but reduces the maximum speed. Such happiness costs a lot, it is much easier to make KA24DET for this money.
The most correct tuning of KA24 is turbocharging, moreover, the stock piston piston holds the supercharger quite well. For this you need to buy T3/T04E 50 trim 0.63 A/R, turbo manifold, downpipe, intercooler, piping, Z32 maf, wideband lambda probe, westgate, blouoff, Walbro 255 pump, 550 cc injectors, Clevite main and connecting rod liners, metal cylinder head gasket, 76mm exhaust, JWT. That’s enough to make about 350hp at the wheels at 1.1 bar.
Using the turbo from the SR20DET, you can put together a more urban configuration for 250+ hp at the wheels. On the big turbos you can blow about 500 hp in stock pistons, if you are lucky, but it is better not to risk and to build a really powerful KA24 use forging under compression ratio 8.5-9, refine the cylinder head, put camshafts 264/264 with springs, change valves, one block will remain in the stock.
