Mercedes-Benz M112 E37 3.7 engine

The M112 E37 engine has been used in the following vehicles:

  • Mercedes-Benz ML 350 (W163)
  • Mercedes-Benz S 350 (W220)
  • Mercedes-Benz SL 350 (R230)
  • Mercedes-Benz Viano 3.5 / Vito 123 (W639)

Mercedes M112 E37 3.7 engine design and repair

Another development based on the M112 E32 was introduced in 2002 on Mercedes-Benz W220 and W163 cars. The M112 E37 engine was intended for large cars and became the largest-volume variant in the M112 family, which includes the M112 E24, M112 E26, M112 E28, M112 E32 and M112 E32 ML AMG. Compared to the 3.2-liter motor, the E37 has a modified cylinder block to accommodate a larger diameter piston (97 mm, was 89.9 mm).

The cylinder heads are similar to those used on the base M112 E32: with a single camshaft (SOHC) and three valves per cylinder: two intake, one exhaust. The diameter of the intake valves has been increased to 38 mm, the exhaust valves 43 mm. It still utilizes a variable valve timing system, hydrocompensators, and a variable-length intake manifold.

The timing mechanism uses a chain, the average life of which is about 200 thousand kilometers. Engine management system Bosch Motronic ME 2.0.

The motor was designed for Mercedes models with the index 350.

Together with M112 E37, a related unified V8 M113 E50 was produced.

Production of 3.7-liter engines continued until 2008, after which this V6 gave way to a new M 272 KE/DE 35.

Modifications of M 112 E 37 engines

  1. M112.970 (2002 – 2003) – version with 235 hp at 5750 rpm, torque 345 Nm at 3000 rpm. It was installed on Mercedes-Benz ML 350 W163.
  2. M112.972 (2002 – 2005) – version with an output of 245 hp at 5700 rpm, torque 350 Nm at 3000 rpm. It was installed on Mercedes-Benz S 350 W220.
  3. M112.973 (2003 – 2006 c.y.) – analog of M 112.972 for Mercedes-Benz SL 350 R230.
  4. M112.975 (2003 – 2005) – analog of M 112.972 for Mercedes-Benz S 350 4Matic W220.
  5. M112.976 (2004 – 2008) – version with an output of 231 hp at 5600 rpm, torque 345 Nm at 2500 rpm. It was installed on Mercedes-Benz Vito 123/Viano 3.5 W639.

Problems and disadvantages of Mercedes M112 3.7 engines

  • The signature failure of this series of engines is considered to be the destruction of the crankshaft pulley.
  • The remaining problems of the motor are in one way or another associated with increased oil consumption.
  • Because of contamination of the crankcase ventilation, the lubricant leaks out from under the gaskets and oil seals.
  • The main cause of oil loss here is usually due to blistered oil caps.
  • Lubricant leakage points are also the oil filter housing and heat exchanger.

Mercedes M112 engine tuning

Chip tuning. Compressor

The M112 engine has an excellent margin for increasing power and for this purpose the market provides a wide range of tuning accessories. The easiest and least complicated step on this path can be the atmospheric version. We will need sport camshafts Schrick 256/268 (or other), cold intake, catalyst-free exhaust or fully sport exhaust and appropriate firmware. The output will be about 270 hp.

A more powerful city engine can be built by installing a mechanical supercharger. There are ready compressor kits (from Kleemann for example), which do not require replacement of the piston, the standard motor will withstand pressure up to 0.5 bar. Together with E32 ML AMG injectors, fuel pump, 3″ outlet, the output will reach ~360 hp and the engine will be much closer to the M112 E32 ML AMG, but the cost of pleasure is very high. For even more power, you need to change the pistons, lower the compression ratio, port the cylinder head and boldly blow far beyond 0.5 bar.
