Reliability, problems and repairs of the BMW M62B35 engine
The new model of the younger V-eight BMW got on the assembly line in 1996 and replaced the M60B30. The M62B44 engine served as the base for this engine, in the block of which a short-stroke crankshaft was installed, and the cylinder diameter was reduced to 84 mm. The casings remained nickasil and only since 1998 went alusil. Relative to the predecessor M60B30, the modernized engine used new pistons, metal-ceramic connecting rods remained unchanged.
The cylinder heads are slightly modified, camshafts have been changed, the characteristics of the new ones are as follows: phase 236/228, lift 9/9. Lightened plates and springs, valves are the same as on M60, diameter of inlet 32 mm, exhaust 28.5 mm.
The cylinder-head covers are made of magnesium, the timing chain is single-row, the average service life is 150-200 thousand kilometers. The intake manifold is improved, new throttle plates, ignition coils are similar to those used on the M52 series, programmable thermostat is introduced. Engine management system Bosch DME M5.2.
In 1998, the engine was slightly modernized and received the name M62TUB35, from the main innovations it is worth noting the VANOS intake shaft timing system, a new intake manifold with narrow channels, electronic throttle, Bosch DME M7.2 engine management system.
This powertrain was used in BMW vehicles with the 35i index.
A replacement for the M62B35 came out in 2001 under the name N62B36 and within two years it had completely taken the place of the 3.5-liter M62.
Troubles and faults of BMW M62B35 engines
Malfunctions, diseases, problems and other unpleasant moments of operation of the M62B35, similar to the older version of the M62B44. You can read about them here.
Tuning the BMW M62B35 engine
Shafts. Compressor
Tuning of M62B35 is not different from what was done on M62B44, you can read about it in detail here. Naturally, as a result of tuning, the power of the 3.5-liter engine will be lower than that of a 4.4-liter with similar tuning.
